🗺 How to Read This Map
① Goshen — Joseph's Assignment — Find 'Goshen' labeled in the eastern Delta region of the map, roughly center-left. When Joseph's brothers arrived during the famine and he revealed himself, he told them: 'Ye shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and ye shall be near unto me' (Genesis 45:10). Goshen was the fertile northeastern Delta — ideal pasture land for their flocks.
② On or Beth-Shemesh (Heliopolis) — Find 'On or Beth-Shemesh' labeled toward the bottom-center of the map, north of Cairo and Memphis. Pharaoh gave Joseph the daughter of the priest of On as his wife — Asenath, daughter of Potiphera. On (Heliopolis in Greek) was the great center of Egyptian sun worship, home of the obelisks later moved to Rome and Istanbul.
③ Zoan (Tanis/Rameses) — Find 'Zoan' labeled in red in the upper Delta area. Zoan is identified with Tanis, and possibly with the later city of Rameses. Psalm 78:43 places God's miracles in 'the field of Zoan.' This northeastern Delta area was the seat of the Hyksos Pharaohs under whom Joseph rose to power.
④ Memphis and the Pyramids — Find 'Memphis' and 'Pyramids' in the lower-left of the map, south of Cairo. Memphis was Egypt's ancient administrative capital. The Pyramids of Giza — visible to Joseph every day — were already ancient by his time, built over 1,000 years before. Joseph would have administered grain storage operations across this entire Delta region.
What This Map Shows

✦ Zoan/Rameses — Hyksos capital
✦ On (Heliopolis) — Joseph's father-in-law's city
✦ Memphis — administrative capital of Egypt
✦ The Pyramids — ancient even in Joseph's day
✦ The Nile Delta — Egypt's breadbasket
✦ Cairo — near ancient On/Heliopolis
✦ The Bitter Lakes — eastern boundary

Thirteen Years from Pit to Palace

Look at this map of Lower Egypt — the Nile Delta, the most fertile region of the ancient world. Joseph arrived here as a slave at seventeen, sold to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh. He served faithfully, rose to run Potiphar's entire household — and then was falsely accused by Potiphar's wife and thrown in prison. From slavery to prison: the trajectory seemed irreversible. It took thirteen years before it reversed.

In prison, Joseph interpreted dreams for two of Pharaoh's officials — the chief butler and the chief baker. He asked the butler: "Think on me when it shall be well with thee, and shew kindness, I pray thee, unto me... and bring me out of this house" (Genesis 40:14). The butler forgot him for two full years. Then Pharaoh dreamed of seven fat cows devoured by seven thin cows, and seven good ears of grain swallowed by seven blighted ears. None of Egypt's magicians could interpret the dream. The butler finally remembered Joseph.

Joseph was brought from the dungeon, shaved, changed his clothes, and stood before Pharaoh. He interpreted the dream precisely: seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine so severe that the abundance would be forgotten. And he gave Pharaoh a plan: appoint a wise man over Egypt, store twenty percent of each year's harvest during the good years, and manage the reserves during the famine. Pharaoh looked at his court and said: "Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?" (Genesis 41:38). He gave Joseph his own ring, dressed him in fine linen, put a gold chain around his neck, set him in the second royal chariot, and made him ruler over all Egypt. In a single day. At thirty years old.

Find the key locations on this map. Goshen in the eastern Delta — labeled on the map — was the territory Joseph would eventually assign to his family. On/Heliopolis in the south is where his wife Asenath's father served as priest. Zoan in the north is where the Hyksos court likely sat. Memphis in the south was the administrative capital. Joseph operated across the entire Delta — this map shows you the scale of the operation he managed, and the empire he administered through one of the most dramatic personal reversals in recorded history.

Joseph in Egypt — From Prison to Palace

Falsely accused, thrown in Pharaoh's prison — and lifted in a single day from the dungeon to the second throne of the most powerful empire on earth
"And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt. And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck."
— Genesis 41:41–42 (KJV)
